Help changing bad habits

  • 3
  • 3

I am a very recent revert and was wondering how others change bad habits they have? I grew up in a catholic family so this is very new to me. Please do not judge. I am trying to fulling embrace Allah the way I did as a child.

To give more detail. I have trouble remembering to pray before eating. I also am worried as I am slowly replacing my wardrobe from the clothes my ex husband wanted me to wear which is to revealing.

Side question for other reverts. How long did it take before you were finally done changing your past lifestyle and fully embrace Islam?

Thank you to everyone for your answers.

    Assalamualaikum, sister!

I’m a recent revert as well! If I’m being honest it took me awhile, like a month or so, to even grasp the idea of Salah, and from time to time I do get lazy from doing it, Astaghfirullah.

I know it’s a must for a Muslim to follow the rules, but take it one step at a time because not everyone perfects everything the first try. Just keep trying and trying. Being a Muslim means is to have discipline, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have your shortcomings. Allah knows that of us, that is why when we have sinned or done something wrong we must always make repentance to Allah. No one is perfect because nothing in this Dunya is perfect. So, sister it is alright to make mistakes, but always remember to discipline yourself afterwards, and make your connection with Allah stronger.

It’s hard to just immediately diminish bad habits, but that’s why discipline must come to play so you can replace those bad habits with good habits. Even I am still trying to strengthen and improve my deen. So, it’s okay to fall short, but come back stronger and always seek help, forgiveness, and guidance from Allah :))

    And Allah knows best

I would say first find a good Islamic group/ community. Then get involved and start to hang around and build with some striving Muslims. I’m sure in no times your habits will get better.

Simply read the Quran in Arabic and translation and watch some tafsir on YouTube or find tafsirs online. Being curious and learning more and more about our deen keeps us away from sins and involved in trying to implement what we studied into our daily life. Quran is the cure to  the heartbreak and sins. I use this app to read the Quran. Remember, a good muslim is the one who keeps trying and trying and bettering themselves for the sake of Allah. I also reverted recently btw and these things helped me alot.

    1. You have to work step by step During prayer time, you should ask ALLAH to help you get rid of bad habits and else you want
    2. ALLAH will definitely help you, just ask and repeat the request over and over and do not despair

There is a very famous quote, ” you are average of 5 people you meet everyday.” I think you need to surround bit more with Islamic community, Muslim people and most importantly Muslim culture. And don’t worry, Allah granted you as a revert, He will In sha Allah help you with the process all along
